What's said at school....gets blogged about

Things I heard at school today:

"Miss Barnes, I'm super sure you love those boys."

"You have to be at least 1 million years old to have a boyfriend."

"You love the same boy as Miss Clawson. So I decided that you actually love the other boy."

"You're probably jealous, huh?"

"Shelby! Miss Barnes is in love with a boy!"

"I'm gonna tell all the teachers in the whole entire school about this. They'll love it!"

"Miss Barnes, why do you just laugh when I ask you about your boyfriends?"

First graders say funny things...

One of the best things about teaching first grade is all the funny things students say with such innocence.  My students are convinced that all teachers should be married and have kids. It baffles them that I fall in neither of those categories. But it can lead to some pretty funny conversations. :)

Student: "Miss Barnes, I know you're in love with one of those boys you hang out with."
Me: "Oh yeah? Which one?"
S: "I don't know. One of them. Who do you even hang out with?"
M: "Lately, a boy named David and another one named Cody."
S: "Hmmm....it must be Cody!"
I gave no response other than laughing. And a few others students had come to listen.
S: "I knew it! See? You're smiling. You totally love Cody!"

Later today, same student:

S: "Miss Barnes, you shouldn't hang out with boys."
M: "Why not? What if I like hanging out with boys?"
S: "Ahhh! You're gonna make me throw up!" (as he starts for the door)
M: (laughing) "So and so, if girls don't hang out with boys, how are they supposed to find someone to marry?"
S: "Ah man! I didn't think about that! But you have to be at least 16 to get married."
M: "I'm way more than 16, bud."
S: "No, wait. I meant 20."
M: "Well, I'm more than 20, too. Remember?" (pretty sure they ask me on a daily basis how old I am!)
S: "Well then, you've just gotta get married. I guess you can still hang out with boys, then."

This is the same kid who once told me he needed to go home because he needed cough surgery.  What am I going to do next year when I no longer have this kid in my class?!

So I took a 3 month break....

Okay, I didn't really take a break. I just never got around to writing anything to post. And let's be honest, my life is not really that exciting right now.I do the same ole thing every day. But......some exciting things have been happening as of late. :)

To start with, I survived Halloween with first graders! It was a rough couple of days, and I confiscated a lot of candy (wrapped, thank goodness!) for a bit, but I made it! And it was actually a lot of fun.

As we began coming up on Thanksgiving, I was super excited to learn that my grandparents were coming down from Washington and I would get to see them again. Although, that mood quickly changed when I got a phone call saying Grandma had passed away in her sleep early that Wednesday morning. It was a good thing school was already out for the holiday and I could go straight home and I didn't have to find a sub in the middle of the day. It was so strange to be with the whole family and to be at her house and not have to there to listen to my stories, or to hug, or to watch her play with Connor and Cody. I miss her every day, but it's nice to know that she's got my back from the other side now. :)

Just 2 weeks later, my roommate lost her grandma, too. Needless to say, December was a bit of a dreary month for us. But it got better! Christmas break came, and I finally got to go back to North Carolina! We anxiously awaited the arrival of Baby Rogan the whole time I was there. In fact, I eventually ended up changing my flight home so that I could for sure be there when he came. And it was so worth it! We played lots of Ticket to Ride, Dominion, and Sequence (and probably several others, too) and did a lot of shopping. Oh yeah, and we went to see Le Mis on Christmas day. I ended up taking Jason and Shayla to the hospital the night of the 30th for her to be induced. I headed back there the next morning (around 9:30) and we all just hung out all day. She finally got an epidural around 4pm, and then we continued to play card games and watch tv, etc. Baby finally made his appearance at 6:34 am on January 1! And he squeaked when he cried! It was seriously so cute! I ended up going back to their apartment around 8 that morning to sleep for a few hours, but I was back at the hospital by 11. I got to sit and hold him pretty much all day, and it was one of the best things ever! I just wish they lived closer so that I could go get some baby snuggles whenever I want.

During the long weekend last month, we met a couple of new guys in our ward. They are both super stellar guys! That Monday, the one where we didn't have school, our stake went tubing up at Soldier Hollow. After a lot of convincing (and a lot of eye lash batting, probably) we got David and Cody to agree to come. :) Heather and I hung out in the lodge and Liz, David, Cody, Ashley, Jill, and Jason all went tubing. After a while Cody came and hung out with us inside. The next thing we knew, Liz was coming to get us to say that we had to go, fast, because Ashley had hurt her knee and we had to take her to the hospital. So we ended up at the ER in Heber until midnight, and then we all got up and went to work bright and early the next morning. Yeah, that was a bit of a rough day! But it was quite the bonding experience with the boys (David and Cody) and we've hung out with them pretty much every day since then. We even got them to agree to go dancing with us a couple weeks ago! And last week, Heather and I went rock climbing with them. Hooray for checking something off my bucket list! One of the best parts, though, is that David and Liz are now dating, and she's already provided us with m&m's.........and she now also owes us ice cream. :) A couple days ago, Heather and I placed bets on when they'll be engaged. Ha! We're so funny.

I finished all my paper work to apply for my visa to go to India this summer! I just need to mail it in this week. Hopefully I can be booking my flights by the end of the month! Less than 5 months left until I go! I'm so excited! I really wish summer would just get here already.....
